Robert Novak, syndicated columnist known for being the first to publicly reveal Valerie Plame's identity as a CIA operative, former Crossfire host, "compassionate conservative", and all-around sleaze ball, did his part to ease traffic congestion this morning by hitting a pedestrian and roaring away from the scene of the crime in his black Corvette.
He might have made a clean getaway were it not for bicycle commuter and attorney David Bono. Bono said a "black Corvette convertible with top closed plowed into the guy. The guy is sort of splayed onto the windshield.” Bono had also observed that the pedestrian had been within the crosswalk, and crossing on the "walk" signal before he became airborne. Bono chased Speedy Bob a half block, preventing an escape by placing his bike in front of the car, and called 911 Bono said that Novak kept trying to get away. Bono told him that you can't hit a pedestrian and just drive away. Novak is quoted as saying "I didn't see him there." Maybe he looked like an enormous bird on the windshield?
Incredibly Novak was only charged with failing to yield the right of way, nothing about hitting a pedestrian or leaving the scene of a crime. Where I live it is felony hit and run, perhaps the laws are different in the nation's capitol?
Fun facts. Novak is known around D.C. as an "aggressive" driver, easily spotted in his sports cars. In 2001, he cursed a pedestrian for allegedly jaywalking. "Learn to read the signs, (bodily orifice)" the righteous one barked before tearing off as reported by the Washington Post. Novak explained to the paper: "He was crossing on the red light. I really hate jaywalkers. I despise them. Since I don't run the country, all I can do is yell at 'em. The other option is to run 'em over, but as a compassionate conservative, I would never do that." (not where there are witnesses, as it turns out)
Two years later, the same column reported that Novak had gone to a racing school in Florida.
"I've wanted to be a race car driver all my life, and anyone who has watched me drive can tell you that,” Novak proudly stated. Indeed, race car driver, and privileged homicidal maniac with a proven record of no morals,scruples, or consequences.I too, wish you had chosen race car driving rather than Washington D.C. Bob.
