Dr Laura Schlessinger Bible Email

This old Dr Laura Schlessinger email-0-round expresses well the fatal flaw in Religious Fundamentalism and the literal interpretation of the Bible.

It was said to be sent to Dr. Laura in 2000 in response to the conservative talk show host's bigotry and intolerance directed toward gay men and women, contending such bigotry is okay because it's in the Bible! A few years later Schlessinger changed her religion from an Orthodox Jew to a Evangelical Christian.  snopes story

Hypocrite Dr Laura - who preaches no sex before marriage, the sanctity of marriage and who rudely attacks callers for not adhering to her intolerant sexual views on these matters - is pictured here in one of many such photographs as a married women who dressing up in black leather to cheat on her husband. This is one of the nicer shots.

Dear Dr. Laura,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.

a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

g) Lev 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev 19:27. How should they die?

i) I know from Lev 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev 24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your devoted disciple and adoring fan.

Funny blog entry, however most Christians (and probably most Jews) don't consider these to be authoritative instruction in the 21st century. It cracked me up to read it, and I am going to send this to my Christian friends. We always like a laugh that shows how we have not seriously considered portions of scripture.

Seriously, though, these sections you quoted are simply historical record. Human thinking and institutions have evolved much since then. There are a lot of examples in scripture of what we should not do. You have very astutely picked out several of them.

I don't understand what this has to do with Dr. Laura, since your entry doesn't say why this was relevant.

Thanks for your thoughtful posting. I am glad I found it on reddit.

Hold on there! If that is true, and the Ten Commandments are from the Old Testicles, then they don't matter and there is no reason for Christians to be whining and sniveling about putting them up in courtrooms, schools, parks and such... Or is this really the same basic issue of the orginal? That you can pick and choose what to pick and choose? Depending upon how much of an intolerant wanker one is...

This IS hysterical!

If ONE Old Testament law is to be obeyed,
then surely the rest should too, and who
better to tell us how to lead this life than the all-knowing one.

Yippee! It's amateur theologian hour again at Rack Jite! Sorry I arrived late. I'll assume you guys are just trying to poke a little fun and are not convinced there is any critical thinking going on with these posts.

This snippet is worthwhile, however, when extracted from its context: "there is no reason for Christians to be whining and sniveling about putting them up in courtrooms, schools, parks and such."

There's not. There's no good reason for the church to entangle herself in the world, politics, law-making, etc. Perhaps on that we can all agree...

Problem with that is that the vast majority of Christians disagree with that and you, as do most Americans and most voters. Most Americans want creation science taught in public schools, want God on our money, want prayer forced in public schools, want the Ten Commandments in public schools and courtrooms.

Thankfully only about one third of Americans want the GOVERNMENT rather than the indivdiual to decide on who can have an abortion. Which is all fine and well if they are consistant with GOVERNMENT intrusion over individual rights. Which the NEVER ARE! :)

"Problem with that is that the vast majority of Christians disagree with that and you"

Exactly. That's the problem, and we're working on it. Questions: Are you only against religious intrusion from the right? Are you willing to denounce the extensive activity of the church within the Democratic party as well?

You men dem negra churches? :)

I ain going there... Its the old racist canard that there is no moral difference between the oppressed and the oppressor. The Right must always fall into semantic mumbo jumbo refusing to address that.

I am also one of the very few liberals who is not all a tither about Tibet. They can kiss my ass. What is going on there is demanding a theocracy based upon the Dali Lama (who rejects it). Who are now building terrorist networks like al queda to force their radical religious political GOVERNEMNT upon everyone.

Religion benefits the weak OR stupid and I resent it being forced by the weak OR stupid upon everyone else.
But absolutely I will never deny the weak OR stupid their religious silliness, it keeps the weak OR stupid under control. Why else would anyone with a brain pretend its real?

"You men dem negra churches?"

You mean like the one I am a member of, right? I will assume by the smiley face you weren't being offensive intentionally.

Yeah, that would represent a portion of the church influence in the democratic party. However, if you are uncomfortable with the racial aspect, leave off the black church altogether and answer the questions solely with respect to liberal mainline white denominations, or the Unitarian church for that matter...

"Why else would anyone with a brain pretend its real?"

Come on RJ...don't lure me into embarrassing you on your home court.

Religious Quotes

"There is a story, which is fairly well known, about when the missionaries came to Africa. They had the Bible and we, the natives, had the land. They said "Let us pray," and we dutifully shut our eyes. When we opened them, why, they now had the land and we had the Bible."
