It's just a guess, but I doubt that this is the 50th Birthday Barbie, unless she's been taking worse care of herself than I have!
Democratic Delegate and doll denouncer from W. VA Jeff Edlridge, is taking the
larger issues by the horns. He is proposing a ban on the sale of Barbie Dolls. The iconic doll will turn 50 March 9th, and can only be a good role model for those hitting middle age, a time when your body goes through changes, but Barbie's doesn't. Where has he been for 50 years? Strangely, the dolls are collected by women of all ages, often spending outrageous amounts of money for them. He might possibly be depriving a female relative of one of her favorite pastimes.
Eldridge also plans to go after other dolls like her in his state. Apparently he hasn't seen the pre-teen, and teen age "Bratts" and other little Ho dollss. I mean really...Barbs is probably a grandmother by now, even if she would need to have ribs removed, and a lot of liposuction to maintain that bod, and we're all aware, wink wink..that they aren't Ken's. It's inspiration to see her thin active life!
He is under the mistaken impression that girls growing up under the influence of the big breasted, tiny waisted, and long legged doll with impossible proportions is harmful. He says "The dolls influence girls to place too much importance on physical beauty, at the expense of their intellectual and emotional development."Balderdash! I and my friends had Barbies and spent many creative hours ignoring our inner beauty, trying to fashion clothes for that impossibly proportioned doll. It did not influence our self image one bit! I know I have been on a diet since age 10, when I decided that 5 lbs was simply too much to lug around....nope, no long term effects! Others have anorexia, but you can't always pin it on Barb. Why not Karen Carpenter, and the skin and bones which now constitute actresses, models, and teen idols?
I would have a vintage doll worth hundreds of dollars had my mother not given it to a neice, whose mother - it turns out, had always considered Barbie to be a woman of ill repute, and tossed her out. I'm happy to report, her daughter is a real piece of work, even without the influence of Barbie.
