I don’t know about you all, but it makes my stomach do flip flops to see Bush and his cronies sucking up to every known church denomination in an effort to gain votes. If he’s talking to the Pope, then yes indeed we’re against abortion, sex education, and stem cell research. When kickin’ it with the fundies he might even pick up a snake and dance around a little. Despite observers stating that he and his prayer circle secretly chuckle about the fundamentalist base, they remain stalwart and large in numbers.Church groups have been encouraged to take over school boards, thus influencing what your child will be exposed to in science and <gasp> reproduction.
One of the largest indicators that the division between church and state is way out of hand were the recent presidential candidate debates which included questioning about the candidates religious faith, and belief in evolution. It would have been political suicide to say one was an atheist or agnostic. Obama laid it down in a speech given at a convention at the United Church of Christ last Saturday. He stated his views on the divisive nature of religion. Obama is a member of the United Church of Christ. In 1972 they ordained a gay minister, and endorses same sex marriage. He believes it should be a state issue, not determined by a Constitutional amendment. One paragraph from his speech sets the tone of the message.
Faith got hi-jacked partly because of the so-called Christian Leaders all too eager to exploit what divides us,” the Illinois Senator said. “At every opportunity they’ve told evangelical Christians that Democrats disrespect their values and dislike their church, while suggesting to the rest of the country that religious Americans care only about issues like abortion, school prayer, and intelligent design.” Obamaspainsitall - AP wirestory
