I’ve often wondered what it was about astronauts which made them capable of strapping themselves into a flame shooting projectile. Thanks to the desperate actions of astronaut Lisa Nowak, we may soon find out.
It seems some have “the right stuff”. At least two have been told that they were so impaired as to cause a flight risk, but flew anyway. Lisa’s actions have caused NASA to investigate astronauts’ mental and behavioral health, and may lead to strict guidelines on alcohol use. If so, Lisa will know what it’s like to be the most unpopular person at NASA.
Ms Nowak, who rode the Space Shuttle last year, brought attention to the problem last February, because of love. Presumably too drunk to fly, she put on a diaper, so as not to lose valuable time, strapped herself into her car, and drove all night from Houston to Orlando. You see, she had a plane to catch. Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman was flying into Orlando.
It’s doubtful that she expected a welcoming committee in the form of Lisa Nowack, the third corner in a love triangle. While Nowak’s condition upon arrival in Orlando is best left to speculation, there is no doubt she arrived in time. She was arrested and charged with assault. The results of NASA’s investigation are to be released this Friday. If strict rules are enforced, will there be anyone left who will fly without “the right stuff”?

Whatever they're doing seems to be workin'.
Hey, just about all the astronauts live in my neighborhood. We even have a park named after the only Black Astronaut who died in the Challenger. So we have one black in town but he's dead. :)
