Monday, November 3. 2008G.O.P. becomes the party of intolerance by Paul KrugmanI have to disagree with Dr Paul on this one. This is nothing new, since at least 1994 the Republican Party has been the Party of Intolerance, it is the nature of the Beast. November 3, 2008 Maybe the polls are wrong, and John McCain is about to pull off the biggest election upset in American history. But right now the Democrats seem poised both to win the White House and to greatly expand their majorities in both houses of Congress. Most of the post-election discussion will presumably be about what the Democrats should and will do with their mandate. But let me ask a different question that will also be important for the nation’s future: What will defeat do to the Republicans? You might think, perhaps hope, that Republicans will engage in some soul-searching, that they’ll ask themselves whether and how they lost touch with the national mainstream. But my prediction is that this won’t happen any time soon. Instead, the Republican rump, the party that’s left after the election, will be the party that attends Sarah Palin’s rallies, where crowds chant “Vote McCain, not Hussein!” It will be the party of Saxby Chambliss, the senator from Georgia, who, observing large-scale early voting by African-Americans, warns his supporters that “the other folks are voting.” It will be the party that harbors menacing fantasies about Barack Obama’s Marxist — or was that Islamic? — roots. Why will the G.O.P. become more, not less, extreme? For one thing, projections suggest that this election will drive many of the remaining Republican moderates out of Congress, while leaving the hard right in place. For example, Larry Sabato, the election forecaster, predicts that seven Senate seats currently held by Republicans will go Democratic on Tuesday. According to the liberal-conservative rankings of the political scientists Keith Poole and Howard Rosenthal, five of the soon-to-be-gone senators are more moderate than the median Republican senator — so the rump, the G.O.P. caucus that remains, will have shifted further to the right. The same thing seems set to happen in the House. Also, the Republican base already seems to be gearing up to regard defeat not as a verdict on conservative policies, but as the result of an evil conspiracy. A recent Democracy Corps poll found that Republicans, by a margin of more than two to one, believe that Mr. McCain is losing “because the mainstream media is biased” rather than “because Americans are tired of George Bush.” And Mr. McCain has laid the groundwork for feverish claims that the election was stolen, declaring that the community activist group Acorn — which, as Factcheck.org points out, has never “been found guilty of, or even charged with” causing fraudulent votes to be cast — “is now on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy.” Needless to say, the potential voters Acorn tries to register are disproportionately “other folks,” as Mr. Chambliss might put it. Anyway, the Republican base, egged on by the McCain-Palin campaign, thinks that elections should reflect the views of “real Americans” — and most of the people reading this column probably don’t qualify. Thus, in the face of polls suggesting that Mr. Obama will win Virginia, a top McCain aide declared that the “real Virginia” — the southern part of the state, excluding the Washington, D.C., suburbs — favors Mr. McCain. A majority of Americans now live in big metropolitan areas, but while visiting a small town in North Carolina, Ms. Palin described it as “what I call the real America,” one of the “pro-America” parts of the nation. The real America, it seems, is small-town, mainly southern and, above all, white. I’m not saying that the G.O.P. is about to become irrelevant. Republicans will still be in a position to block some Democratic initiatives, especially if the Democrats fail to achieve a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. And that blocking ability will ensure that the G.O.P. continues to receive plenty of corporate dollars: this year the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has poured money into the campaigns of Senate Republicans like Minnesota’s Norm Coleman, precisely in the hope of denying Democrats a majority large enough to pass pro-labor legislation. But the G.O.P.’s long transformation into the party of the unreasonable right, a haven for racists and reactionaries, seems likely to accelerate as a result of the impending defeat. This will pose a dilemma for moderate conservatives. Many of them spent the Bush years in denial, closing their eyes to the administration’s dishonesty and contempt for the rule of law. Some of them have tried to maintain that denial through this year’s election season, even as the McCain-Palin campaign’s tactics have grown ever uglier. But one of these days they’re going to have to realize that the G.O.P. has become the party of intolerance. Digg | Reddit | Stumble | Buzz it! | Email Article | Kick! Home

Tuesday, October 28. 2008Alaska Senator Ted Stevens found Guilty of 7 Felonies
Speaking of Phil Gramm, it was only a few weeks ago that Phil - the spokesman for the father of unregulated free markets Milton Friedman, and our generations' unregulated free market spokesman Fed Chairman Allen Greenspan - was going to be McCain' top financial advisor in his cabinet. There has been a change of plans in that it seems. There are three interesting issues regarding the Ted Stevens verdict. First is the ongoing news that one jury member was a hysterical and potentially violent member which the jury told the judge they could not deal with. As soon as that person was replaced a guilty verdict came down. During that news cycle, and it being DC, Americans saw that person as one of those overweight black women with an attitude. You betcha we did! Turns out to be just the opposite, some crazyass Republican operative in the jury room...

Monday, September 15. 2008Despicable racial stereotype Obama Waffles sold at Rep. Family and Values SummitAt the Values Voter Summit this week one could hear Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney speak, then mosey over and purchase a once-in-a-lifetime waffle mix, sold by a lobbying arm of the Family Research Center. There were stacks of "Obama Waffle Mix" selling briskly from Thursday through Saturday at ten bucks a pop. The photo on the box features Barack Obama as a racial stereotype. Playing off of the old image of the pancake-mix icon Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as a demeaning stereotype. Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly. Placing Obama in Arab-like headdress on the top flap, recalls the false rumor that he is a follower of Islam, though he is actually a Christian, and there is nothing wrong with following Islam even if he were. Wait, there are yet more people to insult! On the back of the box, Obama is depicted in stereotypical Mexican dress, including a sombrero, above a recipe for "Open Border Fiesta Waffles" that says it can serve "4 or more illegal aliens." The recipe includes a tip: "While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language?" The novelty item also takes shots at 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry, Obama's wife, Michelle, and Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. When questioned as to whether this was a racial stereotype, a huckster said: "We had some people mention that to us, but you think of Newman's Own or Emeril's — there are tons and tons of personality-branded food products on the market. So we've taken that model and, using political satire, have highlighted his policies, his position changes."Yesssssssssss.....the similarities between this and Newman's Own must have whizzed past me, not having the satirical abilities of the right wing strategists who dreamed this up. Momentary pause to pull on your hip waders. Organizers only cut the sales on Saturday saying they didn't realize the boxes displayed "offensive material." I sincerely hope voters will keep this in mind when making a decision on the "family values party" who stoop to conquer, both insulting your intelligence, and attempting to hide the fact that there is no substance to their campaign. Friday, September 12. 2008Victims of Sexual Assault Billed for Their Own Test Kits With Mayor Palin
It just keeps getting better. When Barack Obama sponsored legislation to prevent Illinois sexual assault victims from being required to pay for their own rape kits, I naively thought it was already common practice, and redundant to pass laws ensuring the victims wouldn't be further victimized.
To my great shock, it is not needless legislation. Some small-town functionaries like Sarah Palin charged victims for their own rape kits while she was mayor of Wasilla, causing women who were already upset and embarrassed to pay from $300-$1200 each for the standard test. Of course those reluctant to report, were unable if they hadn't the money. It's likely that Wasilla had one of the lowest reported rape rates in the country. The Governor who signed the new law preventing sexual assault victims from paying for their own rape kits was a Democrat, Tony Knowles. You might want to perform a public service and share this with any woman you know who might be voting for John McCain and Sarah Palin. It is very much like "The BAD Old Days" when rape victims were accused of fibbing, or deserving it due to the short skirts they wore...as if rape is a crime of lust, not power and violence. Do we want someone with such an archaic anti-woman stance in office? Add this to her Anti-choice ranting and you have the furthest thing from a feminist, an odd stance since it is only because of feminists before her that she is on the ticket as VP. Knowles rightly compares charging rape victims to "Billing the victim of a burglary for fingerprinting and photographing the crime scene, or for the cost of gathering other evidence. Nor should we bill rape victims just because the crime scene happens to be their bodies?" The new bill would also make law enforcement agencies that are investigating a sexual assault responsible for the costs of testing victims for sexually transmitted diseases and emergency contraception. "Emergency contraception" is no doubt a large grain of sand in Ms Palin's craw. An ardent Anti-Choice activist, she (obviously) is against birth control, and one can well imagine that though it is legal, the morning after pill taken immediately after a violent assault would be against her "moral" code, and as such...unavailable to a woman who is the victim of a violent assault, who chooses to give herself a chance not to be pregnant by taking a pill the very next day. That is a far cry from the accusations that it is murder and abortion as many extreme Fundie pharmacists do when denying them to women with perfectly legitimate prescriptions. Let us hope the women who are buying the Palin action figures pictured here, (complete with big gun) and her signature $300. glasses, come out of shopping mode just long enough to see that voting for her is voting for a female chauvinist pig....and no one said she was wearing lipstick. Wednesday, September 10. 2008McCain camp: Obama's 'lipstick' remark disgraceful - Gender Card
Pictured are Sarah and a few friends from back home.
Long ago and far away, John McCain stated that "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig." He was referring to Hillary Clinton's health care plan. You don't recall the incident? Perhaps that's because
Senator Clinton didn't screech as if she'd seen a mouse, and play the Gender Card.
The same comment from Barack Obama, concerning GOP nominee John McCain, stating that McCain will change Washington, but he's just like President Bush. Obviously talking about McCain and change, Obama said "You can put lipstick on a pig," to an outbreak of laughter, shouts and raucous applause from his audience, clearly drawing a connection to Palin's joke even if it's not what Obama meant. "It's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still going to stink after eight years." What seems like a very clear statement regarding McCain touting change, drew intentional misdirection and huffy demands for apologies - for Sarah Palin. That's "disgraceful." For anyone who was lost on a desert island, Palin trotted out a tired old joke during her speech, saying that the way to discern a soccer mom like her from a Pit Bull was lipstick. From henceforth any comment containing the word Lipstick shall be a direct slam or compliment to Sarah Palin, lacking any genuine dirt to dodge from the Obama Campaign. Their attempts to manufacture them are sad, pathetic, and clumsy attempts at utilizing the gender card. Monday, September 8. 2008McCain's RNC Walter Reed Backdrop Flop, Principal Says Repugs Lied
They say it's easier to beg forgiveness than to ask permission, but after numerous tries at skipping both, the McCain Campaign is still at it. One twist is that they are fibbing about it this time. Of
course I'm speaking of The Walter Reed Middle School Kerfuffle. You may find this to be petty, but IT happened during his opening statements at the Republican National Convention when the dramatic backdrop of Walter Reed Hospital was to come into view as his backdrop allowing him to speak of his years as a POW, of course. The audience was so confused that more attention and controversy took place over the gigantic poster of Walter Reed Middle School than the opening of his speech, and more criticism and debate later was sparked by the strange vision.
At least this explains why he feels that Veteran's programs have improved since the public outcry about the disgusting facilities for Veterans, Walter Reed being the flagship hospital. You must admit, the school by the same name does look good. Character matters! When told of the mistake, his campaign later issued a claim that they'd intended to use the school as part of the theme, and furthermore had asked for and received permission! It looks like detention for the entire McCain staff. Principal Donna Tobin would rather the facility had not been included. She posted this statement Friday on the school's official blog: " It has been brought to the school’s attention that a picture of the front of our school, Walter Reed Middle School, was used as a backdrop at the Republican National Convention. Permission to use the front of our school for the Republican National Convention was not given by our school nor is the use of our school’s picture an endorsement of any political party or view." You mean.....she didn't give them permission, and it wasn't just a part of their well planned presentation? Do you think they'd lie to us about more important things? Okay, we'll add Walter Reed Middle School to the growing list. Jackson Browne, ABBA, Heart, Van Halen, John Cougar Mellancamp, who's next? Tuesday, September 2. 2008Lindsay Lohan Who's Palin? Why Parents Should Discuss Sex With Kids
No ordinary shotgun wedding, this could be a BYOG celebration. Pictured are Baby Daddy Levi Johnston and Bristol Palin
Lindsay Lohan's MySpace comments on this issue echo the views of many who are more, shall we say "mature" and are surprised to be agreeing with the 22-year-old Lohan's MySpace page on such weighty subjects. In this instance, Lohan is five years older than the17-yr-old pregnant teen and bride to be, who happens to be the daughter of recent surprise - filled McCain VP pick Sarah Palin. After Lohan expressed her view that we're hearing more about Palin's daughter than Palin's political views, and what she might do to make our country a less destructive place, Lohan addressed the issue of the day in an admirable plea to parents. "I think that parents need to recognize how important it is to talk to their children about the things that can result from being sexually active if they aren't protecting themselves (birth control, condoms, etc.)," she wrote. Lindsay, you are so right! The sad fact is that in Palin World, there is abstinence and there is marriage. Palin may not have told us her views or plans to improve our country, but she is showing us a graphic example. Obviously Palin's beliefs run counter to Lohan's suggestions to speak to your children about sexuality, birth and disease control, as well as your feelings for or against teen sex. How hard can that be if you have communication with your child? Perhaps if you have many civic jobs and a litter of children, you can't schedule it in? Meowwww This isn't just about Palin's daughter. It is the same "education" Palin and her ilk are pushing upon all of us, In other words, no sex education in schools or homes. The classic Fundie "just say no" to sex, a time-proven method of increasing teen-age pregnancy, as proven by any statistics comparing countries with open discussions, to those where church and state have merged. Keep watching Ms Lohan, this is but the tip of the Fundie iceberg. It doesn't stop with one's children. Palin feels strongly about taking women's hard won rights to choose away, after all of these years. Far from two loving parents, Palin's grandchild will have two ignorant teen-agers, wed at the end of a shotgun, and doomed to fail - as do most forced marriages between children in this country. Far from an inconvenient pregnancy, this should be an eye-opening lesson for anyone who could possibly be undecided. Lindsay Lohan Who's Palin?
