Chinese Suicide Jumper Gets Unexpected Push

Chen Fuchao had been standing on the Haizhu bridge for five hours contemplating suicide. He saw it as the only way to deal with the failure of a contruction project leaving him 0,000 in debt. Meanwhile police cordoned the area off, and refused 66-year old Lai Jianscheng who was passing by, who had volunteered to help. What a compassionate gesture in a world where people are far too impatient to wait for a fellow human being in crisis.
Lai – having slipped under a barrier undected, was seen by surprised police, with
his hand extended toward Fuchao, the two shook hands which appeared to be a turning point. It was, Lai pushed Fuchao off of the ledge! Fortunately, the 26 foot fall was eased by the partially inflated air cushion the police had placed below the bridge

"I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interest," Lai was quoted as saying by Xinhua. "They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities’ attention to their appeals."

As luck would have it, Lai was passing on his way to get medication for a long standing mental illness. Photos in the Beijing Morning Post showed Lai, shoeless and in a T-shirt, saluting after Chen fell.
All in a day’s work for this believer in the good of public interest!
