Donald Trump has long defined himself as ‘pro-life’ and anti-abortion, saying abortion should be illegal in this country, and going so far as to say that women should be punished for having abortions. At a Wisconsin Town Hall on Wednesday, Chris Matthews showed us just how much thought Trump has really given the issue. This one minute, and forty seconds of video covers Matthews asking Trump the logical follow-up; what punishment should there be for women, if abortion is illegal once again? If there is a crime, there are criminal punishments which follow
Sit down if you’re standing up. Donald Trump doesn’t have an answer. Trump performed his usual deflection, generalization and evasion…But Matthews doggedly stayed on course, even when Trump attempted a nasty personal diversion, citing Matthew’s own Catholic church. Trump now knows that a moral issue in a church is quite different from a secular law.
One certainly gets the impression that yelling ‘abortion is murder’ is quite different from defending the position or the ramifications of making a right into a crime. Trump actually becomes flustered, and Mathews is to be congratulated for doing his job, and doing it well. It makes me wonder why so few have succeeded in getting a straight answer from Donald Trump.
Later that day..The Clueless Candidate must have thought better of the phrase “punishing women.” He issued a correction later the same day, saying he wanted to punish doctors – not women, as if it doesn’t amount to the very same thing.
