There was a time when only about 11% of Americans had a positive picture of Dick Cheney, leaving about 90% of us seeing him as a Darth Vader clone. Evil is as evil does. But times change, especially when uppity Negroes live in the White House. So now Vice President Cheney McScrooge is the chosen spokesman for Republican, American, Family and Christian values advocating torture. It is what Jesus would do.
Oh sure there are a few others now making public pronouncements defending torture, but most of them are made with CIA espirt de corps in mind. Well other than former CIA director Michael Hayden who is now the most ubiquitous outspoken advocate of torture for Republicans.
Public support for torture is not all that popular even for Republicans. Fox News and talk radio aside, I have seen the most adamant defense of torture in Letters to the Editor here in the Houston Chronicle. I mean they just love it. Loudly, proudly, in your face and more of it. It is the nature of the Beast.
Torture is exclusively a Republican thing, well other than Muslim theocracies, communist regimes, fascists and Nazis anyway. It is part of the Republican values and character business. Torture goes well with execution chambers, preemptive wars, hitting kids with boards, sticks and belts. The raucous support of white cops who kill unarmed black men, tearing families apart by rounding up of millions of Hispanics to put in camps and then deported, the war on women’s reproduction, the gay bigotry, the religions intolerance, the racism / nativism, the assault rifles with the double 40 round clips. All hailed and disseminated daily through America’s 5000 Dairy Queens.
