Colbert: What really matters is Dog Poop on Stephen’s lawn!

This issue represents much of the problem we suffer as Americans. It is not only that such anger is directed at something as mundane as a poop on our lawn, but a long list of small annoyances that create ever loss of freedom, common sense and often ends with bullets flying. Sure there needs to be rules in cement covered downtown areas or stacking up in small parks. But in suburbia it is better to leave the poop lay and disappear in a couple days than carrying it around from place to place.

I cannot throw a stick in the ocean for Easy my fat old Golden Retriever. It is against the law to let him off the leash to go get the stick. Now with cell phones when I reject that out of hand – as everyone should do – there is always some busybody in my face with a cell phone threatening to call the police. I have two standard retorts for these kind of people.

“What you need is to be parachuted into Southern Sudan with only the shirt on your back and a return ticket for a year later.”

“While you are standing there whining about a dog swimming out int the ocean to get a stick, there is a woman in a burka poking around a pile of rubble with a stick looking for the limbs of her dead children.”

And of course either response generates only a blank stare and no break in dialing.

Beware the loss of freedom and liberty does not come from the Federal Government, or even state government, it comes from local police, city counsels and homeowner associations.  No boats in the driveway and house colors only in some sort of DRAB version of grey, brown or  white. No loud music even for the seconds it may take to drive it by.  No live music on the lake on a few Summer Sunday afternoons, It is not just that we have gotten fat in width, but fat in our nature as well. The shallow end of the pool is getting more crowded everyday.
