Columbus Day Under Attack Stephen Colbert

Columbus Day is  Under Attack Stephen Colbert

Columbus Day Under Attack Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert declares that the “White Christian establishment is under attack again.” Colbert and like-minded folks are circling the wagons to protect themselves from attack by the relentless ‘secular progressives’ – an aggressive lot, who are determined to change a sacred holiday! You can see Columbus and Jesus pictured as they wait for the Santa Maria who is en route to the new land.

While this is a humorous ‘report’ by Stephen Colbert,  Columbus Day has been quietly yielding to a more appropriate celebration called “Indigenous People’s Day.”  In Seattle, the Quinault Nation argued in favor of the change last week saying “Nobody discovered Washington.” Some might say it remains undiscovered, but I digress. Tribal president Fawn Sharp pointed out. “This action will allow us to bring into future and present a day honoring our rich history.”  Stephen argues that America was under their feet all of the time, but it wasn’t discovered until Columbus planted his flag. This kind of  logic is failing to hold ground for Columbus fans.South Dakota will celebrate “Native American Day.” The city of Berkeley was way ahead, dropping Columbus Day in 1992 and Minneapolis voted to drop the holiday and rename it “Indigenous People’s Day” in April.

So – why would anyone object ti changing the name of the Monday we get off of school or work ?  It seems that the Italian and Catholic community is heavily invested in Columbus Day. It’s a cultural celebration – read parties and parades! Where have I been? I just thought it was a three-day holiday bearing the name of a lost explorer.
Similarly, Down Under – “Australia Day” which celebrates Captain Cook’s arrival there in 1788 is derisively called “Invasion Day” by many.    Australians do have a way of getting to the point!
