John Oliver covers the Democratic convention, and comments on the unconventional state of our democracy, where a narcissistic sociopath has people in other countries wondering just what’s going on here in the U.S.A..
A comparison to the Republican event last week is inevitable, with a star-studded roster of important names in politics and entertainment noticeable by their absence. While the Democratic convention was off to a very rocky start, a parade of stirring speeches followed, with accurate and humorous commentary by Oliver. The mood was optimistic particularly with last week’s pessimistic, hate-fest barely over.
However, the emotional highlight was surely the patriotic and moving speech of Khizr Khan, the father of a deceased Muslim U.S. soldier. Cutting to the very last line, Mr. Khan challenged Donald Trump, saying “You have sacrificed nothing!”
Asked to address the remarks by the grieving father, Trump didn’t express empathy. He didn’t openly recognize that people of varied origins, colors and religions have given their all for this country, as a human being would do, and it is certainly a presidential thing to do. Trump let it be know that he has sacrificed! Asked to elaborate, Trump claims to have employed thousands – ‘no tens of thousands’, built great structures, worked very hard, and been very successful. So there!
Trump himself has bragged that he ‘has all of the best words’ and as a special bonus, ‘the biggest brain’ with which to use those words. Perhaps he couldn’t locate them for this interview?
