Friendswood, Texas Doesn’t Hate Muslims, they Just Love their Lawns

The controversy goes on in the firing of principle Robin Lowe by the Friendswood, Texas School Board. After some anti Muslim graffiti was found in the school’s bathroom and verbal and physical bullying of a Muslim student, Principle Robin Lowe had two Muslim women come in for a short auditorium presentation of the facts of the Islamic religion and culture. Within a week Lowe was fired as principle.

"That’s what parents are so upset about: the fact that we weren’t notified. Friendswood is made out to be this racist, bigoted city and it is not. … They don’t care whether you’re black, white or purple — or what religion you are — as long as you keep up with your yard and take care of your kids." said Friendswood mother of three Shannon Trochesset.

Shannon explains how the people of Friendswood feel about this issue. It’s not about last years voting for English Only! laws along with laws to keep Mexicans from working or living in Friendswood unless they could prove citizenship. Nor is it that of the 30,000 people living there less than 800 are African Americans. Rather it is about their lawns, deeply edged and dog poo free. There are priorities in Friendswood, a well trimmed lawn (wall and fence) makes for good neighbors. Controversy highlights pitfalls to teaching faith

Friendswood should not be singled out in this or any of these endless examples of religious intolerance and racial and ethnic bigotry, after all, it permeates all of Texas, all of the 13 original slave states and Idaho. But there is some degree of hypocrisy in this one.

The state of Texas has recently passed a few Christian laws. Public school teachers here cannot teach creation science, but they are free to question evolution, discuss that suspect theory, recommend creation science books and even dispense free creation science text books donated by unnamed Christian idiots (Of Pandas and People). But more to the point, we just passed a law that in Texas Public Schools teaching ABOUT religion, the Bible and comparative religion is okay. Which is exactly what was done in this case. As we can see in this case that the intention of that law was not about tolerance but a way of Christian public school boards and teachers to get their Christian licks in.

This thing took off because of local right wing talk radio which generated the onslaught of emails and the letters to the editors. That in turn brought in various Christian groups and Christian State and local officials hellbent upon forcing their intolerant brand of Texas Christianity upon everyone’s children.

Though an advocate for gun control legislation and against the death penalty in cases such as this (including giving the FLDS a free ride to molest children because they are Christians) I will toss those beliefs to the wind for the time being. This crap is the reason for all the bigotry, sexism, hate, torture, murder, death and war that goes on in the Middle East and around the world every GODDAMN day.
