It is believed that man turning grey wolves into dogs happened about 20,000 years ago and in just several human generations, which then spread around the world in very short amount of a time. If THEY had dogs you had better get dogs too. You know, like abombs. In fact the dogs gave hunter gatherers not only home security, but helped realize the domestication of herd animals, which in turn gave humans time enough to think about putting seeds in the ground for crops which dogs could watch over to keep grazers away.
