Happy Mother’s Day : The True & Cheap History of Mother’s Day

Happy Mother's Day The True & Cheap History of Mother's Day
Heaven forbid that you purchased one! Maybe you’ve sent a bouquet of posies, or created a picture or necklace out of colored macaroni for your Mum?  After seeing the story of Ann Jarvis, who gladly impoverished herself to keep Mother’s Day true to the spirit of the day, and free of commercialism, you’ll see why ’tis better to pluck thy neighbor’s dandelions than to spend $15. on a card. (Make sure Mom sees this too, or she may not agree)   Despite what  cynics grumble from one holiday to the next, Mothers’s Day was not made up by Hallmark Cards or Teleflora.

This fun and quirky video traces Mother’s Day back to the Civil War, and the women who were moved to create a  women’s friendship day, for those who had sacrificed so much. Of course they pushed this day along when they weren’t picketing for equal rights, raising children, convincing Woodrow Wilson to help  or penning little ditties like ‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic.’  I hope they soon retired, as I’m feeling like a slacker by comparison!
