Since Homeland Security recently followed U.S. Customs into the Gestapo business, we now have federal agents surrounding homes, breaking through doors and arresting men, women and children of a specific ethnicity and putting entire families into detention centers (camps) for mass deportation (by bus rather than train). Did you know that? Ring a bell?
And all for what? Because a race of mixed Spanish/Indian people are going to nuke Chicago? Because people with the wrong colored card are causing massive unemployment? Because when they are run over by a truck and go to emergency rooms they are at fault for our failing health care system? Or is it because they always show up to work on time, every day, work hard and surpass us in all that Family Value business? Come on, that is not what this is about. You can see the issue for what it is upfront in all its bigoted glory by watching any two minutes of Lou Dobbs on CNN, or in a Presidential debate hearing Tom Tancredo wail about little else, or read about the various Right-wing militias gunning down on the border or even going to davidduke.com. But it was best expressed most recently when Bill O’Reilly howled the truth of the matter by stating that it’s all a matter that, “white Christians who hold power must be swept out by a new multicultural tide.” At least O’Reilly and Pat Buchanan are not afraid to tell it like it is, no matter how disgusting they may be.
Back in 1994 Prop 187 which denied illegal immigrants state services was winning the day. Gov. Pete Wilson, Bill Gates, and the GOP pushed it to popular success though the courts took most of the horror out of it. The joy conservatives felt with their short run success ended with the long range result that there will be no more Pete Wilsons’, Bill Gates’ or Ronald Reagans’ running much of anything in California any longer. The high Latino population turned California so BLUE that GOP Presidential candidates don’t even bother with it any more, which is why the RNC is now on a campaign to change the state constitution to split electoral votes rather than winner take all.
This same dynamic is coming to a head down here in Dumbass. The Hispanic population here in Texas has come to see what this immigration crackdown is really about, not security or the economy, but ethnicity. They are leaving the conservative fold in droves, LULAC is thriving as never before while Texas Hispanic GOP lobbies and organizations are not only having their memberships jump ship, but their leadership as well. Various editorials around the state are saying that Texas will turn as Blue as California by 2012. And in 2008 Hispanic Democrat Rick Noriega has a very good chance of becoming US Senator. It may take time for a majority to see the bigotry in ourselves as happened with blacks, women and more recently gays, this issue too is now in the awakening stage.
