On “Last Week Tonight” John Oliver ‘goes there’ with an eye-popping parody of inane political attack ads; the major culprits being Mitch McConnell and Alison Grimes. Operating under the premise that we must hit rock bottom before we can begin to raise the bar again, and that there’s no way we can do that within the limits of network television, John lowers it on HBO. He then hilariously lowers it some more until microbes can’t slither under.
A little background is in order. To demonstrate how simplistic and frankly dumb ads have become, I’m sure you remember Joni Ernst who campaigned on her valuable experience: “I grew up on a farm castrating hogs, so when I get to Washington I’ll know how to cut the pork.” Cue Hannibal, he knows how to cook it. Then there were the gun happy candidates. One shows off his guns, his family history with guns, and fires off a cannon. Perhaps the most memorable gun ad is a scary, smiling Bob Quast for #termlimits, who promises, “I’m gonna use my Glock to blow yer balls off!”
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and his Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes are on a race to the bottom. McConnell declares “War!” not only on his challenger, but also on the President and those who are allegedly threatening a war on coal – also known as Kentucky! This is the only problem Kentucky has according to McConnell.
Grimes in retaliation, is running an ad showing McConnell burning down a house, then presumably trying to put it out with a stream of urine, the better to take credit for his fire fighting efforts. How to unseat McConnell? Grimes claims she has something McConnell does not. A uterus. Somehow this makes her more qualified, declaring, ” Women get it done!” and “I’m proud to be a home grown Kentucky girl, unlike Mitch McConnell.” The lady speaks truth.
Where can they go from here? As John said, nowhere on network TV, but “HBO is the moral wild west of sex and violence.” Look out here comes ‘rock bottom’ – the place where political ads must go before they can rebound. To that end, John’s staff has prepared attack ads for both candidates. Beware all who enter here, what is seen cannot be unseen! Just try to remember that this is for the greater good.
Mitch McConnell might go here: He must further paint Alison Grimes as someone who not only hates coal, but hates coal miners. In a manic gore fest, Grimes attacks innocent miners in their work place, and even goes after…A wee kitten!
Sadly, we only have the video which might be made by Alison Grimes to discount McConnell. So brace yourselves!
Alison Grimes might retaliate by pointing out that people have been dominated by “old, white wrinkled dicks for too long,” bringing to mind the GOP. So, how wouldja like to see the old, white wrinkled dick that’s been telling you what to do for thirty years? You wouldn’t? Too bad, you will see it, but only so we can begin to heal.
Truly, there is nowhere to go but up!
