North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stars in one of the most popular video dance mash-ups of the summer, and he’s not happy about it! The North has taken the position that the clip ‘seriously compromises Kim’s dignity and authority.’ Some speculate that the video could cause WW111, because Kim is seriously humor impaired. The video originated in China – (thank goodness it wasn’t us). When North Korea asked China to stop the spread of the video, Beijing replied that they were unable to oblige…And they were not being obstinate. The video had taken off internationally, and spread largely due to Kim Jong Un’s protests.
The video superimposes Kim’s face onto a plethora of scenes from viral dance videos, TV shows and even the action film Kung fu Hustle. Kim’s fascination with weaponry is also used to good satirical effect. It could be so much worse. Nowhere is Kim shown to be rhythmically challenged. In one scene Kim pirouettes in a dance studio…A move which ends with a kick by President Obama. Other dancing world leaders include Russian President Putin and Japan’s P.M. Shinzo Abe…None of whom have complained.
The catchy tune is a Chinese pop hit by the Chopstick Brothers.
The video is the work of a Chinese man named Zhang, who once studied in South Korea…And presumably has no plans to go anywhere near Korea – North or South again.
