Last Week Tonight with John Oliver North Korea and Band Laibach

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver North Korean Celebration with Slovenian Art Metal Band Laibach

On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver takes us to North Korea, where the Slovenian band Laibach puts a nihilistic death metal spin on ‘The Sound of Music,’ and other party favorites. Kim Jong Un is planning the party of the century to celebrate the 70th anniversary of North Korea’s liberation from colonial rule by Japan. While I suspect hungry North Koreans might appreciate a large buffet…Or an extra bowl of rice, party food remains uncertain. However, music has been carefully selected and secured by Kim Jong Un.

Choosing from the best in the world, Kim Jong Un announced that Slovenian ‘Art Rock band’ Laibach will bolster the celebration with live music. Typical of the band, ‘Dance With Laibach’ features marching skeletons, while a guttural lead ‘singer’ vocalizes while clad in military garb.  Accused of glorifying fascism the band answered: “We are fascists as much as Hitler was a painter.” John hits the nail on the head, saying: “They are fascists, they’re just very, very bad at it.” The band will have North Koreans up on their feet  dancing – or marching, afraid to show  displeasure.

As a special treat the band has promised to do a medley from the musical “Sound of Music.” Truly! Yes, all of your favorite VanTrapp favorites in barking frog and metal.   ‘Doe! A Deer, A Female DEER!’  And everyone’s favorite, ‘Warm Woolen MITTENS  and Whiskers on Kittens Must DIE!’
