In response to the belief that racism and sexism is over in America I tell the story of having lunch with a few friends at a booth in front of a large window facing the street. With my friends on the one side of the booth I wave to a friend they cannot see across the street. They turn to see three people at the bus stop, one white male, one black male and a woman, the ask which one I waved to. My answer was what everyone’s answer would be, either “the white guy,” “the black guy,” or “the girl.” All of which are THE FIRST thing we notice about another person.
