The reason George Bush chose the word “Homeland” to name our new federal police force is that Hitler already opted “Fatherland” and Stalin “Motherland” for the same purposes.
This issue jumped out at me the other day when I found four articles in two days in the Houston Chronicle about this issue. The first was about the death of a Hispanic pregnant woman in the El Paso “Illegal Immigrant” US Customs detention center. The article contained a similar story concerning the death of another Hispanic earlier in the week in an “Illegal Immigrant” US Customs detention center in Rhode Island. On the opposite page that day was the story of a US Customs agent who shot and killed an Hispanic man on the Texas border who was wielding a wire cutter and a rock.
The following day – to it’s credit – the Chronicle wrote an editorial decrying the Republican Congressional push to free Border Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean who shot an unarmed Hispanic man in the back and then covered it up. Had that unarmed man been a White Supremacist (Randy Weaver) or an insane Christian Cult leader (David Koresh) these same Republicans would be screaming for their heads on a pike.
That same day the paper published a column by a conservative local business man taking note of what this new hardass push by Homeland Security to force businesses – within 30 days – to fire all Hispanic employees with questionable paperwork would reek havoc upon our already failing economy. He estimated that just in Texas alone this would mean the loss of 750,000 workers by the end of the year which would cause much of Texas agriculture, hotel, restaurant and construction industries to belly up.
The war cry against illegal immigrants is that they cause unemployment and drain our services. The first is just plainly not true and the second is highly exaggerated when one considers the money they put into the economy.
So what is the reason for this burning desire to deport up to 15 million Hispanics on the lowest rung of our economic ladder? It’s not the money, it’s not unemployment rising nor does it have one damn thing to do with Fatherland Security. Rather its America’s “compassionate conservative” version of Ethnic Cleansing.
