John Oliver reports that a string of voting restrictions affecting African Americans were struck down last week in Wisconsin, Texas and most notably North Carolina, where courts labeled proposed laws; ‘the most restrictive voting law North Carolina has seen since the era of Jim Crow.” While the rest of us were distracted by political conventions and the further antics of Donald Trump, lawmakers in North Carolina diligently studied statistics and spreadsheets to determine which laws and programs make voting more accessible for African Americans. Lawmakers then tried to make it all but impossible for African-Americans (read largely Democrat) voters to reach the polls, or to qualify to register once there.
As John Oliver described the UN-American legislation ;“They didn’t just go with their gut and think it would be discriminatory. They got the spreadsheets, crunched the numbers and knew it would be!’“I don’t know how you did it North Carolina, but I think you officially money-balled racism! Your new state motto should be “North Carolina Ignorance at its smartest!”
