Over one third of Americans want to establish Christianity as a State Religion

thom tillisThis state religion business came to light over a law expected to pass in North Carolina. For since 2010 North Carolina like most Southern States have super majorities of Republicans with a Republican governor and can pretty much do whatever they like. Why in the first election after President Obama was elected president, the Southern States suddenly gained super majorities  in all there branches of government is no mystery.

Good News is that on Friday the North Carolina GOP Speaker of the House House Thom Tillised refused to pass this crap on for a vote. That was a pretty heroic act for a Republican pictured here.

For many many years now I have been trying to arrive at the correct number of American Right-wing Christians. The Religious Right. Evangelical numbnuts. Or however you wish to put it. I mostly used 30% because it was round.  But I often hear it is only 25%. Though I would much rather see it as 33% to make the math easy.

So it was a pleasant surprise the other day when I came across this poll.

34% of Americans would like to see Christianity as a STATE sponsored religion. Full in the face of… “Congress shall make not law respecting the establishment of Religion…” Full in THE FACE of the United States Constitution where in itself it says there will be no religious tests.

I can now say, over one third of Americans want Christianity established as a religion in their state. Which would be 49 Christian, one Mormon.  Looking at it from the other direction it is even worse. Only 47% of Americans are against the idea. A minority of Americans.  Scary as Hell.

The good news is when we break down the numbers further. We find ONLY 32% of Americans want to establish Christianity as a FEDERAL/NATIONAL religion.  That’s LESS THAN ONE THIRD! And  52% reject that idea. A MAJORITY!
