President Obama and the Ghost of Richard Nixon, Gorrell cartoon

obama nixon

I picked this political cartoon from many many just like it!  Gosh…

What I have noticed in all this is how different cable news deals with this than newspapers. If you don’t read papers then it may seem that this could very well be the end of the world as we know it.  It doesn’t even matter the who of it.  I though Chris Matthews head was going to blow apart the other day. And Mika!  Had to laugh like Hell.  The quiet face of scorn.

This is a political nightmare for Democrats, for how long we don’t know. Could fizzle in a year or go for a decade or more.  The legs I am not so sure about.  Fast and Furious is over, Benghazi is now on the wane, the horror of Citizen’s United had much to do with the IRS scandal, and we have yet to see how serious the national security terrorism issues were regarding AP phone taps. And on that last one, it is Republicans who are the ones wanting to tap the phone of the press and through them in jail for security leaks.  But they sure are bunching up hey?

In the short run the trouble is that the GOP sees this as full vindication of all their paranoia, bigotry their seething hatred of the President and government in general and what the guns are for. This will lead to less compromise  though it seems impossible. But make no mistake about it. The next two election cycles well be dominated by negative ads on BENGHAZI, the IRS and the AP. Counting both 2014 and 2016  a billion dollars could be spent on saturation ads for just those issues.  The whys and wherefores are not that important to voters, it’s the headlines.

On the plus side the Demon of Demography that the Republicans so fear may not be much affected. I wonder who much single woman, Hispanics, African American and young people care about Benghazi, the IRS and the AP?
