Jimmy Fallon weighs the Pros and Cons, the glitz, the glamor and yes – the uglier side as well, of watching the Academy Awards on television. Have you picked a winner yet? I can’t say that I’ve seen that many of the contenders. I recently saw ‘American Hustle’ which I enjoyed, and also ‘Philomena.’ Based on a true story, this movie is an eye-opening look at the business of babies born from unwed mothers – as conducted by the horrible nuns of the 1960’s. They couldn’t have done it without shame in the community – the kind of shame that forces parents to send their daughters off to have babies, with the knowledge that they will never see her again.
Other contenders include Leonardo DiCaprio in “Wolf of Wall Street” as a decadent, rich jerk…Jimmy aludes to the plot, One man’s descent into decadence and sleaze is another man’s ‘feel good movie of the year!’ It’s all just so subjective..And Rob Ford helps illustrate the point.
“Her” finds a lonely young man in an unhealthy relationship with a ‘woman’ who needs to be rebooted from time to time, and it’s not what you think. Other contenders are: Captain Phillips
Dallas Buyers Club, Nebraska,12 Years a Slave and Gravity.
Time prevents me from doing more than just listing the films, but time never stops the winners from thanking everyone from their tap dance teacher to their current massage therapist, so pop a lot of corn and prepare for the industry’s biggest night! Of course the real winners, and best actors are those who applaud with the most sincerity as their rival collects the shiny little gold man which should be theirs!
