It is not so much the gun laws as it is the gun culture. Lead by the NRA and gun shops and gun shows a national promotion and celebration of guns and gun violence like not other place on Earth. The American gun culture is exceptional.
We have to come to terms with who drives our gun culture. Look at Cliven Bundy and the militias that brought their weapons of war to his side. Look at the NRA, Sarah Palin, Ted Nugent and of course Timothy McVeigh. I politely call them and their supporters “gun enthusiasts,” but come on, take a hard look at these people. It’s ugly from front to back, top to bottom, and inside out. People you wouldn’t want anywhere near your children, loved ones or living next door.
The art of this Danziger cartoon brings to mind a conversation I had not too long ago. A neighbor was defending some old fart who shot and killed a guard at a Holocaust Museum. The old man had a terminal sickness and bravely did this as his last act. He was only following and putting into action his lifelong beliefs.
I replied that that indeed, what a good idea! Going out with a message. So if I ever got the word that I had only a little time left I will put a .45 bullet in my pocket, drive down to the biggest gun store around, walk up to the largest glass counter filled with guns, ask to see a .45, slip the bullet into the chamber, rest my head on the glass counter, point it down and make a big mess. A strong bloody message with no Jews, guards or anyone hurt. My neighbor got real angry and called me a filthy liberal gun grabber! Which here in Dumbutt is far worse than a killing Jews.
