In “Only in America” news, an elderly Oklahoma couple narrowly escaped injury when a howitzer round tore through their home. How they escaped an encounter with the huge shell is nothing short of miraculous. The home-wrecking artillery shell is said to have been slowed by trees it screamed through en route to the couple’s castle. The enormous round then entered the outside wall, tore through the ceiling and hit another wall.
The vintage 105mm artillery shell, 14″ long and 3.5″ around, was fired from a gun show held at a gun range three miles away, where there’s a lot of head scratching going on today. Owners and promoters puzzle, “for that thing to rise and go so far northwest is just unheard of, we drill all of our shooters, a 30-45 minute drill.” I presume this is considerably less training than the professional operators of such weapons receive in the armed forces – where the weapons are used to tear the living hell out of everything in their path – near and far. . It’s all a surprise to the gun range folks who consider this to be a “freak accident.” It could easily have been a ‘freak’ tragic incident. I’m not alone in hoping they correct their trajectory by next year.
The home owner is not anti-gun, but he may be anti-howitzer these days.Speaking of the WMD, Mr. Kelley said “The people that bring these type of weapons, they need to think – is this really a safe and appropriate area for me to take my weapon of that magnitude?”
