This photo caught my attention as it happens to be my shirt of choice for most of a decade now. It is most well known in Spanish as a GUAYABERA shirt. Also known as CUBAN WEDDING SHIRT or MEXICAN WEDDING SHIRT. It is semi formal wear for the workplace in climates too warm for coat and tie, and as such, the dominate attire for men in South America, Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Philippines and much of South East Asia and India.
I find it utilitarian in having the four pockets and allows me to pass as dressed up enough for weddings and company parties. I also am drawn to the vertical strips of embroidery going down the front over the pockets. To not look like a milkman I wear black ones. Gives me that Mexican Biker look I seek.
What I find most interesting is that Americans are not aware of this shirt even though perhaps as many as A BILLION people wear them most every day. Even Mexican Americans shun them as they know it makes them look Mexican, which means Jan Brewer may grab you when you cross over a bridge.
White, cream, powder blue and black Guayabera shirts are available from the Kohl’s online.
