"I’m too pretty to do homework so my brother has to do it for me." This shirt had been marketed for girls from 7 thru 14, and if you didn’t hear about it yesterday your mind was on other things. You missed the online petition and Twitter campaign which sprang up immediately to remove the offending shirt. The shirt is off of the shelves today – as I suspect is the buyer who purchased it. Penney’s had a catchy sales slogan. "Who has time for homework when there’s a new Justin Beiber album out. She’ll love this shirt that’s just as cute and sassy as she is!" Is dumb implied?
Leave it to Anderson Cooper to dig a bit further and find that the much publicized shirt was the tip of the iceberg! There are several more shirts in the line as well as some disturbing T’s for boys. Anderson Cooper reviews the shirts which can still be purchased at JCPenney, are they less offensive? Not to be a spoiler, I’ll only hint that girls are made of cupcakes and puppies, but most of all shopping, boys and bling! Boys shirts are less frivolous but harder to live up to. In fact, they are expected to be "Winners, Rockstars, and the Coolest Kid Ever" – and all while doing his sister’s homework; about that – I’m guessing that the designer was an only child. How else could he or she be so oblivious to sibling rivalry, and the unlikely chances of a brother doing his sister’s homework?
