John Oliver is taking a break this week from covering weighty topics like health care plan fails and tax plan fails to come…But he left this public service message on the topic of April Fool’s Day. As a comedian, perhaps Oliver is more sensitive to pranks masquerading as humor than some. Still, while many anticipate a day of pranks with glee, far fewer look forward to being the butt of a prank. John is clearly not a fan of the one day a year when such shenanigans are tolerated:
“April Fool’s Day is to comedy what Saint Patrick’s Day is to Irish Culture. That is to say, it is a mockery of the very concept that usually ends in a fist fight.”
If you’re an inveterate prankster, you’ve already dusted off and patched the whoopee cushion, or planned more sophisticated ‘gotchas’ during which you will film the expression of the unsuspecting victim. Oh, what fun you will have! Rein it in for a few moments, and give John’s message a listen. Perhaps you will even be moved to take ‘the pledge.’ Your friends and loved ones will thank you – and they’ll still be speaking to you on April second.
John Oliver, Last Week Tonight will return next Sunday, which gives the Trump six entire days to fill with a decade’s worth of prank-like news!
