John Oliver says the Academy Awards is “whiter than a Yeti n a snowstorm fighting Tilda Swinton”- and that it’s not entirely the Academy’s fault. John isn’t absolving the Academy, but he makes a good case for laying the blame at the foot of those who make the films and old fashioned greed. The sentiment expressed by director Ridley Scott is not unique;
“Say that my lead actor is Mohammad so-and-so from such-and-such, I’m just not going to get it financed.”
There are plenty of roles for people of color, and there are excellent actors of all colors and nationalities who could fill them. Instead, those roles are often filled by Caucasian people in heavy make-up. I direct your gaze to the small photo of John Wayne portraying Genghis Khan…puhlease pilgrim!
Belt yourself in for another entertaining and brilliant expose by John Oliver. All that glitters is not gold, but it sure controls a lot of what you see on the big screen
