I took great joy this morning to find that The Handmaid’s Tale won not only best series and best actress but three other Emmys as well.
I thought when it aired it did not get the respect it deserved.
You know why Sean Spicer was thrown under the bus? Because of Melissa McCarthy on that motorized podium on SNL making him a joke. It was that IMAGE that did him in. You cannot erase images in our minds.
I read Handmaid’s Tale when it came out in the 1980’s understanding then it was a great book that did not get the respect it deserved. But I had forgot most all of it. But after watching the HULU series I will never forget again. The IMAGES stick with us more than words.
The hanging of the lesbian from the crane filmed from inside the van. The Handmaids sweeping the blood off the streets below the hanging wall. The plucking out of the eye. The cold clothed rapes.
Sadly the Emmys aired opposite THE VIETNAM WAR on PBS. And what do most of us remember most now 50 years later of that war? The naked burning girl running up the road toward the camera and the South Vietnam general shooting the Vietcong in the head. Images are stronger than words.
