Or better known in the world of soccer as Darik “Strykher” T.J. Watsun Bowee.
I watched my first few soccer games last week and got to understand it and enjoy it. Here Hear. The rules are simple, the time just keeps clicking away which I like. I also enjoy the goalie, but most of all how a guy near the sideline down near the net kicks the ball into the area in front of the net were a dozen guys hope for serendipity to have the ball come by just right.
The main grip I hear is about the low scoring, but that only makes a score that much more exciting. Like as exciting as anything I can think of other than getting shot.
I also took notice of how much better the players are at feigning injury than basketball players, and how much more intense, connected and seemingly drunk the fans are. All over the world.
Its also the only game with no equipment is necessary so any kid from anywhere can join in.
Last week we had quite a bit of controversy when two celebrities come out against soccer – strange bedfellows Ann Coulter and Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Both surprisingly enough calling the sport unAmerican.
The thrust of their arguments is Americans don’t like low scoring sports. No mention of hockey, but isn’t that just Canada spilling across our Northern borders? Secure our Northern boarders! We need farm workers, maids and roofers most certainly not any more comedians, singers or hockey players. And what’s with American football counting scores counting as 2, 3 and 6? If they were counted as ONES even that would seldom get beyond single digit games as does baseball. Basketball has the highest scores but is a mostly African American game. But wait a minute… Golf is about as white as it gets and comes in second on the high scores rooster. And tennis.
I do have to agree with both columnists that “the more the better” is the very basis of American culture, capitalism and food. Would you like a smaller portion with that?
