Have you ever been desperate to escape the clutches of a physical and emotional habit?
Did you feel so powerless that you would willingly go to jail, or did your desperation drive you to do
something insane – like punching a police officer? I thought not. Whatever was going through Etta Lopez’s mind when she took action to break her cigarette addiction, remains a mystery to most everyone but Ms Lopez.
Perhaps no one was more surprised than Sacramento County deputy Matt Campoy, who upon leaving his shift, was approached by a woman who stepped up and slapped him smack in the kisser. It wasn’t personal, Etta Lopez, age 31, had been waiting in front of the jail for a man in uniform, for hours.
Campy said that Lopez explained why she slapped him, in great detail. She seems to feel that the best and only way for her to stop smoking would be to get locked up in the smoke-free county jail. So great is her conviction, that she’s willing to face jail time and charges of assaulting a peace officer. Other inmates with the nicotine habit will be given smoking cessation help. Lopez is not being given a choice, and will withdraw from the evil weed entirely cold turkey.
