Conan gives Apple a forum in which to rectify their enormous blunder in connection with the new iPhone. If you’ve been under a rock (too), Apple gave a free automatic iTunes download of U2’s new album ‘Songs of Innocence’ with every new iPhone. It sounds like a harmless, well intentioned and maybe even a nice idea, but that is not the prevailing viewpoint.
After spending over $100 million for the download, Apple has been deluged with hostile, vitriolic tweets and email from unappreciative ingrates, AKA customers. Apple VP of Marketing Marcus Pratt summed up consumer reaction. “Apparently giving away a free album by one of the best bands of all time is like going to their house and taking a gigantic crap on their doorstep.” True words. Personally, I wonder how difficult it is to remove an album from a phone without a great deal of wailing and keening. However Apple is making it right with a free APP called appropriately ‘eRase U2.’ No longer will you be plagued with U2 on your phone, nor will you hear it in your own head…eRase U2 deletes everything – and we do mean everything! Oh, and just wait until you see what they have for you afterward. You’ll be eligible for a free access code to download the latest from an Irish rock legend!
To quote Marcus Pratt once again, “Seriously. F.U. it was a free album, get over it!”
