Father Jonathan Morris, who has entered the Fox ‘News’ stable of experts as the official Fox News religion contributor, reveals the ugly truth about some religious believers – quite unintentionally. Morris recently made a case for electing a Christian president, and stressed why an atheist is simply not an option
The priest revealed just how much he knows about politics by sharing this tidbit. “One thing is very certain, you can’t fake religion.”
A second statement makes it abundantly clear that this priest has been in seclusion…Perhaps in a hospital ministry, in a locked ward. Father Morris explained that it’s important for candidates to be “very clear about the values they believe in, – ‘ not making stuff up to get votes.’ ”
Is he just too precious or what?!
So, politicians would never lie about their values, and you can’t fake religion. Gotcha. It follows that we’d be safe with a candidate who claims to be a man or woman of ‘faith’ – as explained by Morris.
“It’s a belief in God, it’s a belief that there are eternal consequences for your actions. And I think that a leader that doesn’t have that — a set of core beliefs that help him to make justice an important part of his life and his decisions because he knows that there are eternal consequences, well, it’s somebody that it’s hard to trust.”
Perhaps I’m reading too much into this, but I have heard people say things which lead me to believe that many of the faithful are only refraining from murder and mayhem because of a fear of eternal damnation.
Is it any wonder they fear their atheist neighbors? For that matter, they fear their Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and Unitarian neighbors too – and some of them aren’t too crazy about their Jewish or Catholic ones, if you must know.
The idea of doing the right and moral thing, because it is right – must be an impossible concept to grasp when one is conditioned to do the right thing only because they fear getting caught and punished – forever! Think about study hall, when the teacher is called out of the room, and you have an inkling of what keeps these folks on the straight and narrow…And what a tenuous grasp they have on morality. Legalism is always a dangerous thing. There was a time when you could fry in hell for eating a hamburger on Friday. The rules of damnation are such, that once you break a small one, you might as well go for the gold and move on up the ladder.
.I can certainly see why they would want (an alleged) believer in the Oval Office, you can’t trust anyone else – like the Founding Fathers, for instance. How that ragtag mess of unbelievers and oddball believers got this thing off of the ground is anyone’s guess.
With nothing to ground him but his faith, we should all pray fervently that the next crackpot who gets into the White House under the flag of ‘faith’ doesn’t fall off of the heavenly bandwagon!
