If you don’t want to know where mum or grams is vacationing, don’t ask! They aren’t ALL at church retreats or three week long pottery camps.

At one tropical beachfront club in Kenya, a group of about 25 dancing men — most of them built like Olympic athletes in their twenties — edge closer and closer to a crowd of more than a dozen white women, all in their autumn years.

"It’s not love, obviously. I didn’t come here looking for a husband," BethAnn said over a pounding beat from the speakers. Joseph is BethAnn’s date, he is 22 and good looking by any standards, she is over 30 years older than he.

"It’s a social arrangement. I buy him a nice shirt and we go out for dinner. For as long as he stays with me he doesn’t pay for anything, and I get what I want — a good time. How is that different from a man buying a young girl dinner?"

It must be very different. Hotel owners and tourism officials claim "IT’S JUST UNWHOLESOME!”

They’re doing everything in their power to discourage the influx of women to Kenya.

These are the same people who depend upon the dollars of the well off men who prey upon boys and girls so poor that they are forced into prostitution. The men have come to take advantage of the approximately 15,000 girls from age 12-18 who perform sex for money, and the other full time sex workers, boys and girls, estimated at around 3,000 who perform “horrific and abominable” sex acts according to the government and UNICEF.

What do Joseph and others like him receive from the influx of British women of a certain age? "When I go into the clubs, those are the only women I look for now," he told Reuters. "I get to live like the rich mzungus (white people) who come here from rich countries, staying in the best hotels and just having my fun."

The manager of a shorefront bar summed up the phenomenon . "Old white guys have always come for the younger girls and boys, preying on their poverty…But these old women followed, they never push the legal age limits they seem happy jus doing what is sneered at in their countries."

What’s "unwholesome" to some, is fun to others. If no laws are broken, I have to wonder what truly bothers those who protest? If this shows us anything, it is that hypocrisy is universal, transcending economics, geography, and even the well-being of the very young. Perhaps if Kenya would welcome new tourists, and discard their outdated notions about women, they could leave behind the shame of depending upon the very young and their enslavement to sex to support the country.
