In Kentucky a five-year-old boy’s birthday turned into a tragedy he will never forget, when he accidentally shot and killed his baby sister. According to police who were called to investigate the shooting, “It’s not uncommon” to give kids weapons, so no charges will be filed against the mother, who left the children unsupervised alone with the loaded twenty two caliber rifle, while she turned her attention to other matters. While the boy was celebrating turning five, he was merely four only hours before, and could scarcely be expected to have good motor control, or to know and practice gun safety. In light of those points, the onus would seem to be upon the mother.
This is the sort of thing which falls under parental negligence at the very least. When I think of guns and five-year-old boys, I think of Super Soakers or maybe cap pistols, not loaded rifles – but I’m a regressive leftie, not a “2nd amendment fetishist.” I borrowed the term from David Pakman, and since gun-lovin’ wackos take umbrage at such labels, perhaps they will take kindly to the new moniker.
The madness doesn’t end here. There’s no reason to get all weepy over Babygirl. Granny stops rocking long enough to pass along some good news. This was not the entirely preventable tragedy that you and I see. “It’s God’s will” and according to granny, “it was her time to go” – where she’s “in good hands with the Lord.” I know He is said to work in mysterious ways, but I believe He expects you to use your brain to protect your young, with the due diligence that even turkeys and wombats exercise to preserve the next generation..
