On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver has stepped in it with Denmark, after reporting the disturbing practice of killing zoo animals to feed to other zoo animals – or to carve up as part of a fun and educational show for the kiddies.
I’ll bet you have fond memories of visiting the zoo as a child, too. If some very angry Danes are right, we were cheated if we didn’t get to see a lion dissection…Or watch as lions devour the giraffe who was on display just last week. While the outcry has been world-wide, Denmark’s zoos are continuing the trend that is widely considered to be inhumane at worst, and different at best. ‘Last Week Tonight’ celebrates that difference by creating a new video ad for them. The ad is educational, and it’s as entertaining as it is disturbing…Just like Denmark’s zoos.
I only mention angry Danes because we are now at war with Denmark – most probably. Many seething natives of Denmark wrote the most hostile comments I’ve seen posted under a video by John Oliver. The posters took each and every joke and reference in this video as a national insult – and many gave Oliver a directive that would be difficult to accomplish.
The sentiments of one man echo those of many; he expressed a desire for his 4-year-old to ‘know how the world works, including how a dead animal looks inside and out.’ This, he somehow teaches the toddler ‘ is like the chicken and steak’ she (used to) enjoy eating. In signing off, he adds: “The world is not made up of unicorns farting rainbows.” True words…Fun to imagine, though.
