On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver uncovers the true story behind India’s hugely unpopular prom site ban last week, where almost 900 sites were taken down by India’s government! Reaction in the U.S. was predictably empathetic; ‘sucks to be them.’
Why would India – of all places, take such a drastic step? Protesters were told by officials that it was feared users of the sites would become “Sex Maniacs.” This is extremely odd, when you consider that India’s culture is not plagued by a Puritan sensibility…Far from it. Consider India’s art, and of course the Kama Sutra. The ancient book has traveled to the four corners of the earth; although I suspect that many just look at the pictures and haven’t done the work…You know who you are.
The ‘sex maniac’ fear sounds crazy – until you see the names of the sites that were banned!
In the ‘good news/bad news’ department, this week, the government relented, and once more the 900 sites are available. Be warned. The names of the sites may put you off of all sexual activity entirely – unless you’re some kind of perverted sex maniac…Which is a kindly euphemism for those who frequent these sites – you freaks!
.I cannot post the site names. Actually I could, but where’s the fun in that? Just believe me, they are well-worth seeing. Oh, and if you have any clue as to what is wrong with prom site users in India after seeing this, please clue ME in, too!
