Last Week Tonight with John Oliver reports on good news in Uganda, where an anti-gay law was overturned on a technicality. Although the vote took place last week, I feel it is relevant. It is also humorous that anti-gay factions lost out due to a simple technicality. You have to show up for votes!
As we struggle with equality for our LGBT citizens here in the US, it is interesting to note that anti-gay clergy (and politicians) are the same everywhere. Exhibit A is the leading anti-gay religious leader in Uganda. As the minister expounds on abomination of gay sex, on the Ugandan “Morning Breeze” show, it appears the host would welcome a great wind to blow his guest out of the studio.
In Uganda, as in the U.S. we live with our gay neighbors without incident, and often without notice. We no more concern ourselves with the mechanics of their sex lives, than we do with the intimate details of our other friends and neighbors. But some people place a great deal of unhealthy emphasis on what they imagine gay people are doing. The Ugandan religious leader is one such person. He puts on a disturbing demonstration of the actions he imagines take place between gay people, while abusing fruit! Excuse me, John insists he is demonstrating a juice cleanse, you decide.
There is one more thing that makes this cleric similar to Americans who hate gay people. He knows he has only one man who is responsible for the moral decline in his country…Thanks Obama!
