On Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, citizens of the United Kingdom are protesting a controversial new law which could empower the government to intrude upon their privacy..The British are rightly concerned about a law that would merely collect their online activities for a year, and then of course share the information – if necessary. I can’t help but compare the proposed law to the extent of privacy Americans gave up under the guise of protection via the Patriot Act. Perhaps that is one reason Britons feel so strongly – plus they haven’t been scared stupid. Good on them!
In an attempt to make the recalcitrant populace take their medicine with a spoonful of sugar, Britons are being told it’s “no different than an itemized phone bill.” John Oliver begs to differ. It’s far different from a phone bill in one very important way!
