Buzzfeed Video sets out to prove that we as a society are doomed, and it will be our abiding love of Smart Phones that will push us happily to extinction! The stark photography doesn’t show a future dystopia. It isn’t a far-off warning as the novel “1984” once was. It is a call to raise your gaze from the wee little screen, and really look at the world as it is crumbling around you – today!
Of course Buzzfeed is exaggerating a bit for the sake of humor, using photos showing our growing disconnect, and playing the dramatic, end-of-the-world music “Gothic Bath” all through the photo proof of our destruction and decay as a society. It is not a new – nor is it a popular opinion that many Americans are tied to their phones in an unhealthy way.
Nowhere will you find this conclusion more vehemently denied than in the comments section beneath articles of this type, where Smart Phone users defend their ‘useful’ and harmless pastime.
Should anyone suggest that it is rude to ignore one’s companions for whomever or whatever is on your phone, that person is accused of being a geezer or a loser who doesn’t own a Smartphone – else they wouldn’t blaspheme. Denials fly claiming that these photos are surely taken out of context. If that is true, then I must be seeing a multitude of similar situations each day which are lacking in context. Everywhere you look people are ignoring one another, but never have we been so connected.
“They” always say the first sign of addiction is denial, but ‘they’ say a lot of silly things. By the way, are you watching this on your Smartphone?
