In a new ad for the Equal Payback Project, comedienne Sarah Silverman prepares to undergo sexual reassignment surgery. She has decided that it’s easier to acquire a penis than to earn equal pay while hindered by the standard equipment she was given at birth. I don’t believe this option is available on most health insurance polices for the stated reason; “I want to make one dollar per hour instead of seventy eight cents.” Still, there is a nice selection from which to choose, as we see when Sarah selects one – complete with the accompanying cajones. She demands “big ones” of course.
A second – and less painful option involves working with the Equal Payback Project. The stated goal of the Project is to even the wage gap. To accomplish the goal, they need to raise the total amount of money that 69 million working women lose over the course of their careers, and to repay them. It is estimated that each woman loses approximately $11 Thousand dollars to the gap, making it imperative to raise a modest $30 trillion dollars.
One must always prepare for contingencies, so if by some chance, the goal of $30 trillion falls short, there is a third and final option. Money raised by the Equal Payback Project, on Tilt – which is a crowd-funding platform, will go to the nonprofit National Women’s Law Center to fight for equal pay legislation through the Workplace Fairness Act. The National Women’s Law Center also advocates for workers for sensible hours, and holds employers accountable for legislation which is already in place.
The timely ad precedes midterm elections, in which Democrats are wisely making pay equity a key issue, while Republicans concern themselves with – the threat of gay marriage, the horror of taxing the super wealthy and convincing people that all green energy kills jobs and closes up cheery coal pits – a family heritage.
