If I can tell if someone on the phone is Black does that make me a racist?
Brings up a story I have used for many decades to try and get white people to understand and come to terms with just how prevalent and often benign racism is in America.
In a restaurant sitting in a booth in front of the window overlooking the street you wave at a friend at the bus stop. The friends at your table look out to see a white guy, a black guy and a woman standing together. They ask which is your friend, without thinking you say either, THE BLACK GUY, THE WHITE GUY or THE WOMAN. It’s deep down and will always be there I suppose, but that does not mean we should give up.
