Hell, I watched this and still had to go Googling to find out what transgender means. I am still not sure but I think it is the big all encompassing category of any variant of men wanting to be women or women wanting to be men.
What I learned roaming about in the transgender world just now is that only people with money can afford to physically change their sex, that along with women’s health being so much different than men’s health makes the primary issue in all this not only the legal rights, the cultural acceptance but health insurance as well.
On a personal note. Back in 1993 when I began this with a hard copy newsletter, the gay publication THE ADVOCATE came to Texas to do a story on me, the last white heterosexual male liberal in Texas. The point I was making 20 years ago, which is what got their attention, was my loud shout that of all the issues in play, allowing gays to be gay was unique in that it took no skin off anyone’s nose.
I enjoyed two sets of gay people coming to my home in a span of a week or so. Two gay males for the story and later two gay women for the pictures.
It was my first sit down discussion with gays of any sort. Tragically, I found all four individuals to be nicer, kinder, more articulate, friendly and better informed than most heterosexuals I had met in my life. So even though I was sold political and intellectually, it was not until that week that it became a personal thing.
But I did not like the picture they chose. I made them take a picture of me with reading glasses down my nose as I glanced over a copy of Ambrose Bierce’s Devil’s Dictionary. Even The Advocate could not offend religion at the time.
