Michael, we will pretend you are not gay if you will pretend we are not bigots.
Oops, wrong picture again of gay NFL players. Sorry. Stephen Colbert brings up a good point. Are bigots born that way as Lady Gaga suggests? Or is it a learning process? Is there a bigot gene? And if so, wouldn’t that fall under “immutable cause” which would make speaking out against such people bigotry in itself?
But if it is not genetic then where does it come from? Primarily it comes from parents and religion, though an environment full of okra, kudzu, Spanish moss and white gravy may have more to do with it than we know.
This piece struck me because just last night I watched the Jackie Robinson movie “42”. The scene that I found most powerful in this history of American racism only lasted a minute.
Father and son Pittsburgh fans sitting in the stands being father and son. But when Jackie Robinson came to the plate the adult suddenly went from father to ugly bigot screaming NWORD THIS AND NWORD THAT. The 10 year old son looked around, you almost hear him thinking, you could see the doubt in his eyes, but no matter, he jumped up to scream NWORD NWORD NWORD!
No matter directed at African Americans, Gays, Mexicans, immigrants or women it’s the same ugly crap coming from the same ugly people.
Sure there seems to be a genetic propensity to be an a whole, after all, looking back at your childhood you will find that most every a whole you knew back then is a Republican today. It’s a life long endeavor with little hope of escape.
The problem is that every ugly bigot sees themselves as God Fearing, Bible following good people walking in the shadow of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And there you have the problem with making stuff up and pretending it’s real. For you can stuff that stuff full of whatever horrible crap you want and put it on the back of God.
