Though no fan of rap music, I can find the message, the poetry and the angst in it, but I have never been able to find the music in it, which is just repetitious DISCO staged choreography with the bass on 10. Hum me the tune? But sure, dance music with a message is better than no dance music with no message at all. I must also add that as a Rock & Roll fan I would be hypocritical to complain about the sexism in it.
I believe the turning point for rap music – when it broke from the hood to become the dominate music form for a generation – was that MTV music video of NWA doing the Areosmith rock song WALK THIS WAY with Areosmith breaking onto their stage. It took hold of the dominate white rock fans of the time and moved them forward into the poetry of hand jive bass.
