When panicked Americans began talking about moving to Canada if Donald Trump is elected, an enterprising booster of beautiful Cape Breton Island put up a website to welcome the nervous hordes to Canada – as a joke. The site has been frequented with far too many Americans to physically fit on the island, which is the size of Hawaii’s Big Island.
Let us all pray Canada never has to host us for more than a vacation. The idea of a mass exodus of Americans cannot be comforting to our northern neighbors. While the site links to information about immigration, jobs and real estate, Americans might be concerned with a few other things. For example, how will Canadians feel about our national obsession with guns, and how do they handle neighborly disputes – is one shot in the air sufficient?
Meredith MacNeill travels to Cape Breton to determine the true extent of the Trump effect, and see whether Canadians are truly ready for us.
