While the intersection is known for jaywalking problems, the area is known for much more serious problems, which
perhaps police could focus upon. The incident has become a flash point of controversy, some saying the officer needn’t have punched a girl in the face, others like the police guild have stated that the officer is clear of any wrongdoing. The American Civil Liberties Union, citing Seattle Police Office of Professional Accountability reports, said Seattle police have a long history of escalating jaywalking citations into force situations. The recent video comes on the heels of an April incident in which a Seattle detective was caught on video stomping on a Latino man as he lay on the ground. The detective was heard telling the man he was "going to beat the (expletive) Mexican phis out of you, homey."
